College football week 2 is in the books. After every week fans can take away things from what happened on the field. Here are 5 things learned from college football week 2. Related: 5 Things to watch in college football week 4.
Texas Tech traveled to Utah in the biggest game of the Big 12 season so far. The Red Raiders were underdogs, but were able to take control of a low-scoring game 10-3. Starting quarterback Behren Morton had to leave the game in the second half and backup Will Hammond really got the offense moving, helping the Red Raiders win 34-10.
Winning this game on the road, and making Utah look so bad doing it, really makes Texas Tech look like they should win the Big 12. There are other competitors, including Iowa State and TCU, but Texas Tech loaded their roster with talent from the transfer portal and it showed against Utah. While there are still big games to be won, teams will be chasing Texas Tech in the Big 12.
Indiana hosted Illinois on Saturday night in a big game that could have future CFP implications. The game was never close, as Indiana easily defeated Illinois, 63-10. Curt Cignetti had his team ready to play and they were up 35-10 at the half. They scored 28 points in the second half, keeping their foot on the pedal.
After losing just to Ohio State (and Notre Dame in the CFP) last season, there was plenty of debate on whether Indiana should’ve made the CFP following the 2024 season. This gives them a big win that will likely bolster their case this season. Not only did they beat a top 10 team, but they did so easily. Look for Indiana to possibly make their second-straight CFP if they take care of business.
Oklahoma was a program that needed a jolt this offseason and they got one. The results are enough to prove it, as the Sooners are now 4-0 following their defeat of Auburn. Two weeks ago, Oklahoma also defeated Michigan, giving them two big wins on the season. Their schedule may be one of the toughest in the country, but with four wins already, they have some wiggle room.
Following a game against Kent State, Oklahoma will have to Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and LSU. That is a daunting schedule, but with how tough it is, the Sooners can lose two or maybe even three if they are lucky and make the CFP. Six of those teams are currently ranked, which makes things difficult. While Oklahoma may not make the CFP, they have at least put themselves in the early conversation for it.
Missouri had a good season in 2024 and this season could be even better. The Tigers defeated South Carolina in week 4, 29-20, in a game where LaNorris Sellers was questionable, but played. The win gives them two wins over power conference teams, South Carolina and Kansas, but more could be on the way for the Tigers.
They will play five teams currently ranked the rest of the way. While it wasn’t seen as a terrible schedule, it still has tough games for the Tigers to deal with. Penn State transfer quarterback Beau Pribula has looked efficient and the run game is something they can lean on. Missouri could end up playing a factor in the SEC Championship race if they continue playing well.
In the American Conference’s biggest game of the weekend, Tulane got blown out by Ole Miss. The Green Wave were the front runners to be the group of five representative in the CFP. They still have that chance because of the work they did against other power conference teams this season. Overall, the American Conference has had great nonconference results.
Tulane has wins over Duke and Northwestern. Army defeated Kansas State. This weekend, Tulsa beat Oklahoma State, while Memphis stayed undefeated by winning against Memphis. Earlier in the season, USF defeated both Florida and Boise State. With so many quality wins, it won’t be a shock to see the team that wins the American make the CFP. That is, unless they beat up on each other too much.
