In their first matchup of the season, Washington was able to narrowly defeat Oregon in Washington. Those two teams matched up in Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Championship Game on Friday. Oregon was favored by over a touchdown all week leading up to the game. There were plenty of back-and-forth moments, but Washington was able to emerge as Pac-12 Champions.
With the win, Washington completed an undefeated season. They were ranked third by the CFP Committee and the win has locked their spot in the bracket. Kalen DeBoer is up for coach of the year awards for the quick turnaround he has done. Now, the Huskies will await their matchup.
The joke Texas is back has been a fun one for years. This season they were able to prove that they were back. The Longhorns just defeated Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship Game to finish the season with a 12-1 record. Their lone loss was to Oklahoma.
Even if Texas doesn’t make the CFP, they had a fantastic season. They won the Big 12 in their last year before joining the SEC. The Longhorns will at least play in a New Year’s Six Bowl and will have the chance to be in the CFP. Only time will tell if they will make the CFP or do well in the SEC next season to stay at this level of success.
The SEC Championship Game pitted Alabama against Georgia. Alabama was able to pull off the upset to defeat Georgia. Jalen Milroe and Isaiah Bond continued their good play to help them get the win. With the win, they finished the season 12-1 with an SEC Championship and the best win of the season.
Their loss to Texas could still hold them back. The Longhorns could stay ahead of them in the rankings and take the last spot in the College Football Playoff. Either way, Nick Saban has done an incredible job taking the team from where they were at the start of the season to even having a chance to make the CFP.
Liberty was able to win the C-USA Championship on Friday night over the New Mexico State Aggies. The win helped them finish off the season with a 13-0 record. They are the only undefeated group of five team left in college football, which is the major reason they should be heading to a NY6 bowl game.
The other reason that Liberty should be selected for a NY6 bowl is the AAC Championship Game result. Tulane had just one loss on the season and was the highest-ranked group of five team by the committee. A win likely got them the spot in the NY6, but they dropped the game to SMU. Now, the bid should go to Liberty.
There has been a lot of debate over Florida State and whether they deserve to be in the College Football Playoff. They are undefeated conference champions, but their starting quarterback was lost for the season with an injury. The Seminoles controlled what they could control by beating Louisville in the ACC Championship.
For the CFP Committee to leave out an undefeated team, it would be unprecedented. They are tasked with putting in the four best teams, but it is hard to make a case that a team with losses is better than a team that is undefeated. The committee has done some surprising things over the years, so anything could happen Sunday, but Florida State deserves a spot in the CFP.
