1. James Franklin is on the Hot Seat

James Franklin has received a lot of criticism over the years for not being able to win the big game. Whether it was against Ohio State, Michigan or a big game in the CFP last year, he has struggled. He has routinely taken care of the routine games, which has given him a level of security at Penn State.

This week, Penn State lost to a winless UCLA team. The loss to UCLA makes it very hard for Penn State to make the CFP, as they may have to win out. With a roster that retained a lot of talent from last year, this is a severe disappointment. He can coach well down the stretch and keep his job, but he’ll have to beat at least one of Indiana or Ohio State in big games, which he has struggled to do in the past.

2. Texas is Broken

Texas hasn’t looked good this season, but now they are officially broken. They lost on the road at Florida, who had one win before this game. The offense didn’t look good and the defense was projected to be one of the best in the country, but couldn’t stop the run or the pass in their defeat.

Arch Manning hasn’t looked like a quality starting quarterback, but it is hard to point to anything going right on that side of the ball. The defense isn’t playing up to projections as well. With two losses already and some tough games ahead, the Longhorns could miss the CFP, which would be a disaster for a program that was ranked no. 1 in the preseason.

3. Miami is an Elite Team

Miami had some quality wins before week 6. They defeated Notre Dame, USF and Florida. The Hurricanes looked the part of one of the nation’s best teams before this week, but due to past seasons, it was hard to buy in. Miami eliminated even more doubters with their win at Florida State this weekend.

The win gives them a lot of quality wins and although they let Florida State get back in the game late, they have looked good in their wins. Carson Beck is playing efficient football and freshman wide receiver Malchi Toney is a star. The team is winning in the trenches and that can produce a lot of good results. Right now, they should be ranked in the top two or three of everyone’s poll.

4. UCLA has Some Hope

UCLA was winless before the week with losses to Mountain West teams. There was little hope for the program. They fired Deshaun Foster as head coach, named Tim Skipper the interim head coach. He handed over play-calling duties to Jerry Neuheisel. The first game with the new roles, UCLA won against Penn State in a 42-37 thriller.

For a program that was so far down, the win gives hope. They were able to score 21 more points than any other game of their season. The Bruins carried Neuheisel off the field, showing their appreciation for his good work as the play caller. They have a good location and some good coaches, if they make some more changes, things could turnaround for the Bruins long-term.

5. Cincinnati is a Contender in the Big 12

Before the week, Cincinnati was favored over Iowa State. The Cyclones were undefeated on the year and even though the game was on the road for them, it was surprising to see that. Cincinnati was able to prove the oddsmakers right, as they defeated 38-30 in a game they were in control of most of the time.

The Bearcats lost their opening week game to Nebraska in a neutral-site game. Since that point, they have won all of their games, including the win over Iowa State and a win over another Big 12, Kansas. Cincinnati was able to run the ball almost at will in this game, with quarterback Brendan Sorsby providing a threat as well. If they keep running the ball this way, their Big 12 schedule doesn’t seem too difficult. They may not make the Big 12 Championship Game, but they should be in contention over the next few weeks.
