There was some alarm over Georgia’s play this season heading into week 6. They hadn’t played the toughest schedule and struggled against teams like Auburn, who they normally handle pretty easily. They really found their footing in week 6, beating Kentucky 51-13.
The encouraging thing from this game was that the Georgia offense started off hot. They were aided by some Kentucky penalties, but Carson Beck had his best game as a Bulldog, passing for 389 yards and four touchdowns. They still have an easier schedule down the stretch, but they proved they can dig deep and get a good performance when a good team shows up.
The joke about Texas being back happens every year. Texas might be back, even after a week 6 loss. The team they lost to, Oklahoma, can say they are back now. Oklahoma finished the 2022 season 6-7 and had a lot of work to do under Brent Venables to start competing. After beating Texas 34-30, the Sooners have proven to be back.
Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel had an incredible performance to lead his team to victory. He passed for 285 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Gabriel added 113 rushing yards, which led the Sooners. In crunch time, Gabriel found Nic Anderson in the back of the end zone to win the game. The Sooners are now in the driver’s seat to win the Big 12.
Scott Satterfield was hired away from Louisville from Cincinnati this past offseason. It didn’t seem like Louisville was too bothered by him leaving. They immediately went and hired one of their own, Purdue’s Jeff Brohm, who went to the school. He had some success at Purdue, but already at Louisville he is proving to be one of the better coaches in the country.
Brohm has Louisville at 6-0 after week 6. While the early season schedule didn’t give the team too many challenges, week 6 saw Notre Dame go to Louisville. The Cardinals handled the game beautifully, slowing down star running back Audric Estime and forcing quarterback Sam Hartman into turnovers. They won 33-20 and now look like they could be on a path to the ACC Championship.
The Pac-12 was known to be a tough conference heading into the 2023 season. Their non-conference record helped build more momentum for the dying conference. Unfortunately, the further the season goes on, the more the teams in the conference will have to beat up on each other.
In week 6, undefeated Washington State lost on the road to UCLA. The loss isn’t the first Pac-12 loss between good teams, as last week Oregon State defeated Utah. Arizona also almost picked off undefeated USC in week 6. Things will only get more interesting as the season goes on, as week 7 has some big matchups for Pac-12 teams.
With under a minute left, Miami just had to take a knee to run out the clock against Georgia Tech. A win would’ve pushed the Hurricanes to 5-0 and would’ve kept some hype around the program. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal elected to run the football instead of entering victory formation. The Hurricanes fumbled and Georgia Tech recovered.
The Yellow Jackets did the improbable when Hanyes King hit Chistian Leary on a deep ball with one second left to win the game. Weirdly, this isn’t the first time this has happened to Cristobal, who also lost a game when kneeling and could have iced it when he was at Oregon against Stanford. Cristobal deserves all of the criticism for not taking a knee, as it cost the Hurricanes a lot.
