On Friday night, Texas Tech came away with a close win over Houston. It was a game between two of the projected contenders in the Big 12, with Texas Tech being the favorite for how much money they put into their roster. The game, and what happened in it, shows that Texas Tech may win the conference, but there isn’t a big gap between teams.
The Red Raiders played two different quarterbacks and struggled to have consistent production. That could be an issue moving forward and the defense will need to take a step forward as well. While they did beat Houston, the Cougars look like they can still be a threat to win the conference, and so too does BYU. It should be a good battle in the Big 12 to find out who will make and win the championship.
In a game that they were favored by over two touchdowns, Texas A&M was upset by Kentucky. The Aggies struggled on both sides of the ball, but the more concerning side was on offense. They scored 21 points, but 14 came in the fourth quarter when they had dug themselves too big of a hole to come out of.
There are a lot of places to lay blame, but Marcel Reed’s performance was not great. He was 26/49 for 236 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown. The problem was that there were plenty of bad decisions and off-target throws in key situations. The Aggies made the CFP last season, but if they truly wanted to compete for a national championship, they could’ve upgraded at quarterback.
Louisville had a big matchup with SMU in week 3. Both teams were ranked and have hopes to make the ACC Championship. The Cardinals were able to win a back-and-forth battle, 41-31. The win showed the offensive firepower that Louisville has, which was something that was also on display in their only loss so far this season to Ole Miss.
With the Win over SMU, Louisville’s schedule sets up well for them the rest of the way. They don’t have a ranked team on their schedule the rest of the season. If they can take care of business, they will be in the ACC Championship Game. Even if they lose in the ACC Championship Game, the CFP Committee has refrained from punishing teams who make their conference championship games and lose. They are in a good spot for a run.
Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU. It was a decision based on his belief that LSU was a better job and a place he could win. He couldn’t coach Ole Miss in the CFP, clearly took the job at a rival. Ole Miss went on to make the CFP semifinals and then geared up for this season. Some coaches and players changed sides of this game, making the LSU-Ole Miss game have a lot more fuel to the fire.
In week 3, Ole Miss got their revenge on LSU. They defeated LSU 32-24 in Kiffin’s return to Oxford. It is a long season and LSU can still accomplish their goals, but for Ole Miss fans, it has to feel great to get the win over a coach who, by his actions, said another program was better. With the resources he has at LSU, Kiffin had a lot of pressure to win this game and didn’t. Both teams could end up playing later in the season, which would be a great storyline.
Rich Rodriguez made the return to the West Virginia program a long time after he made BCS bowls with the likes of Pat White and Steve Slaton helping him out. While the roster isn’t quite at that point, there was some excitement for the Mountaineers to take on Virginia. In the game, West Virginia won 38-27.
The running game was working for the Mountaineers, as they had 247 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. It was a blast from the past to see the offense operating that well under Rodriguez. After a long way back to a power conference job, Rodriguez notched a big win and looks like he could win some more big games down the stretch. Even if he doesn’t, the blast of nostalgia was good to see on Saturday night.
