5 Things Learned From College Football Week 3

Publish Date: September 18, 2022

College football week 3 is in the books. After every week fans can take away things from what happened on the field. Here are 5 things learned from college football week 3.

1. It pays to be a…basketball school?

It is very hard to be elite at both football and basketball as a collegiate athletic program. Some schools get the label as a football school, while others get the basketball school label. Through three weeks, basketball schools have played better than they usually do.

As mentioned in the tweet, Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, UNC, Indiana, UCLA and Syracuse are all undefeated. Kentucky has earned a spot in the top 10. The other schools were projected to be fighting for bowl game appearances, but have a big head start on that. Kansas plays Duke this weekend, which means the basketball schools will for sure have one 4-0 team.

2. Washington is Better Than Projected

Before the season, Washington was projected to finish sixth in the Pac-12. Kalen DeBoer was taking over a program that had slipped under Jimmy Lake and making a bowl game was all that was expected. Washington has a chance to do more than that in 2022.

In week 3, Washington hosted no. 11 Michigan State at home. They controlled the game and won 39-28 behind a great performance from quarterback Michael Penix. The win put the Huskies at 3-0 and may prove that they can compete in the Pac-12 North.

3. Georgia is Really Good

There were a few different ways that Georgia was proven to be very good. First, they defeated South Carolina very easily, 48-7. Not only do they look like their defense is going to be dominant, but their offense also looks improved over last season.

The other way that Georgia’s stock rose (even after they were ranked no. 1), was that Oregon defeated BYU. BYU was coming off a win over Baylor and had some injuries, but are a very good team. Oregon was written off after they lost to Georgia in week 1, but a big win over BYU can help them reestablish themselves as they try to make a run in the Pac-12. If Georgia can make them look that bad, most teams have no hope against the Bulldogs.

4. Bryan Harsin’s Seat is Going to Get Warm

Penn State and Auburn met in a matchup of solid programs. The Nittany Lions showed up ready to play and took the game 41-12. Not only did Auburn lose, they were blown out at home, which just makes things harder for them the rest of the season.

Bryan Harsin was already on the hot seat, right or wrong, after just one season with the team. Another bad season may get Auburn to move quickly for a new coach. The Tigers are 2-1, but have a tough SEC schedule coming up. Penn State looks like a solid team, but things could get worse for Auburn soon.

5. Texas A&M has to Run the Ball

In order to be effective offensively, Texas A&M needs to run the ball. They abandoned the run in their loss to Appalachian State. Against Miami, they were able to establish the run and keep the chains moving enough to win 17-9. Devon Achane rushed for 88 yards on 18 carries for a solid day.

There are plenty of tough games for Texas A&M coming up. They, like most teams, are better when they can run the football. When they don’t, their quarterbacks, who haven’t proven to be great, have to do a lot more. Until they can get better quarterback play on a consistent basis, A&M has to establish the run to win games.
