1. Miami’s Defense Caught up to Them
Miami was undefeated heading into the week, but suffered a loss to Georgia Tech, which shakes up the CFP picture. Their offense has carried them, but in a game they needed their defense to step up, it wasn’t done. They allowed Georgia Tech to score 28 points and that was with starter Haynes King returning from injury for some key runs.
The Yellow Jackets used King well and put freshman quarterback Aaron Philo in for some key throws. In pressure situations he delivered. Miami didn’t do much to stop the Georgia Tech rushing offense. While the offense didn’t play up to their standard, the defense hasn’t lived up to expectations all season long and now it may cost them a spot in the CFP.
2. Lane Kiffin Can Win the Big Game
Lane Kiffin has won a lot of games during his tenure at Ole Miss. He has been criticized for not winning the big games. There were more doubts about that after the Rebels lost to LSU and Kentucky this season. He quelled some doubts by winning a game against Georgia that likely would have kept them out of the playoff if they lost.
Kiffin mentioned how they went into the offseason with a plan to get better players to match up with teams like Georgia. They looked like the better team all game long, winning 28-10. Now, they have set themselves up for success the rest of the way. If they win their last two games of the season against Florida and Mississippi State, games they will be favored in, the Rebels will be in the CFP.
3. Alabama Will Make the CFP
Alabama and LSU matched up with a night game at Tiger Stadium. Brian Kelly hadn’t lost at night in that environment. That changed on Saturday, as Alabama won easily 42-13. In a game that featured some bad weather, Jalen Milroe ran all over the LSU defense to get the Crimson Tide the win. Their defense also stepped up against a lot of talented LSU weapons.
With the win, Alabama has just two losses. They have three games left on the schedule: vs. Mercer, at Oklahoma and vs. Auburn. The Crimson Tide will be favored in every game down the stretch. If they win them they will be in the CFP, which looks extremely lucky at this point.
4. Colorado Has a Clear Path to the CFP
Colorado went down early to Texas Tech on the road, but they were able to come back and win the game. The win puts them at 7-2 on the season. They have two losses, which were to Nebraska and Kansas State. After being ranked 20th in the initial CFP rankings, they will likely move up several spots this week.
The good news for the Buffaloes is that the rest of the schedule is manageable. They play Utah, Kansas and Oklahoma State, who all are in the bottom half of the Big 12 standings. Colorado could make the Big 12 Championship Game and win to abe an automatic bid or could sneak in as an at-large team if some chaos happens.
5. Officiating Needs to Improve
This year there have been a few games where calls have changed the outcome. Miami has notably had a few games come down to a call or two by the officials. It isn’t just limited to them either though. This week, Utah was leading BYU late in the fourth quarter. They were called for a defensive holding that looked questionable at best, which extended the game-winning drive for BYU.
While the social media allegations of referees favoring certain teams might be a little too far, the officiating has been questionable in too many games. That needs to be fixed before next season in all conferences. It might be time to have a central body of officials rather than having them split up in different conferences.
