5 Potential Head Coach Candidates for Washington

Publish Date: January 12, 2024

Kalen DeBoer is leaving Washington to take the Alabama job. Here are five potential head coach candidates for Washington.

1. Ryan Grubb

Grubb is currently the offensive coordinator at Washington. He helped the Huskies have one of the top offenses in the country over the last two seasons, which enabled them to reach the National Championship Game this year. He has also spent time Fresno State and Eastern Michigan.

DeBoer is leaving, but the Huskies could keep some continuity by retaining Grubb. He has been with DeBoer for a while, so this could be his chance to go out on his own. Hiring Grubb could entice players to stay if they are thinking about transferring. He knows how to get the most out of an offense and Grubb can use that to be successful as a head coach.

2. Pete Carroll

Carroll just stepped down as the head coach of the Seahawks. He has had a great career in the NFL and at the college level. Not only does he have college football national championships, he also has a Super Bowl. He is the most qualified person on this list.

After stepping down as head coach, it was clear that Carroll still wanted to be on the sidelines. Would he go back to college with how intensive the work is now? Maybe. He is already in Seattle and has so much energy that he could want a return to the sidelines. Carroll should at least be called to gauge his interest.

3. Lance Leipold

Leipold has done a great job at Kansas to get them to two straight bowl games. In three seasons he has posted a 17-21 overall record, but has done a nice job turning around the program. Before his time at Kansas, he spent time as the head coach of Buffalo and Wisconsin-Whitewater. At Wisconsin-Whitewater, he won six national championships at the D-III level.

Getting a proven winner at the collegiate level could help sustain Washington’s recent success. At every level and every destination, Leipold has found success even when the odds are stacked against him. Washington is heading to the Big Ten and could entice him monetarily to join with more money likely coming in.

4. Jedd Fisch

Fisch has proven himself as the head coach of Arizona. In three seasons with the school, he has a 16-21 record. He turned around the program though and this season won 10 games. Before being the head coach of the Wildcats, he was an assistant at the NFL level and with UCLA.

His impressive coaching tenure at Arizona should have Fisch on the shortlist. With Washington, Fisch would have more resources and could find even more success. Fisch is familiar with recruiting on the West Coast, which could make him a good fit.

5. Matt Campbell

Campbell is the coach at Iowa State and has had a nice run there. He has an 88-63 record as a head coach, which also includes his time at Toledo. With the Cyclones, he has a 53-48 record. He has made six bowl games, which is a nice job for a program that doesn’t have a lot of historic success.

While Campbell is more of a midwest coach, a move could be in store after eight seasons. Like other coaches on the list, he would have more resources at Washington and with the Huskies joining the Big Ten, he could still travel to the midwest a lot. Campbell likely won’t be the first choice, but is still a good head coach worthy of consideration
