Georgia Tech won nine games to make their third-straight bowl game. They defeated three bowl-eligible teams on the season: Clemson, Wake Forest and Duke. All three of their losses were to bowl-eligible teams: NC State, Pittsburgh and Georgia.
The Yellow Jackets score 33.1 points per game, 25th in the country. They pass for 263.2 yards (ranked 29th) and rush for 203 yards (ranked 19th) per game.
Hanes King has been one of the toughest quarterbacks in the country for the Yellow Jackets. He has passed for 2,697 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions on 71.7 percent completion. Seven players have at least 200 receiving yards on the season. Eric Rivers has been the leading receiver with 42 catches for 556 yards and one touchdown. Isiah Canion and Malik Rutherford have also been impressive with 480 and 419 yards, respectively.
King has been Georgia Tech’s leading rushing this season with 922 yards and 15 touchdowns. Malachi Hosley and Jamal Haynes have been the lead backs for the Yellow Jackets. Hosley has 634 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, while Haynes has totaled 504 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
Defensively, they concede 25 points per game, ranking 72nd in the nation. They allow 169.7 rushing yards (ranked 92nd) and 227.3 passing yards (ranked 82nd) per game. Kyle Efford has shown strength at linebacker with 72 total tackles. Akelo Stone has the team-high with four sacks. Ahmari Harvey has shown ball skills with seven passes defended.
The Cougars won 11 games to make their second-straight bowl game. They defeated six teams who went at least .500 on the year: East Carolina, Arizona, Utah, Iowa State, TCU and Cincinnati. Their two losses were both to Texas Tech, who is in the College Football Playoff.
BYU scores 31.9 points per game, tying them for 33rd in the FBS. They pass for 213.2 yards (ranked 85th) and rush for 184.4 yards (ranked 37th) per game.
Freshman Bear Bachmeier has been the starting quarterback for the Cougars this season. He has passed for 2,708 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions on 64.2 percent completion. Four players have over 250 receiving yards on the year. Parker Kingston leads the team with 61 catches for 848 yards and five touchdowns. Chase Roberts and Carsen Ryan have also been great with 745 and 500 receiving yards apiece.
LJ Martin has been a star at running back for the Cougars. he has rushed for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns. Bachmeier’s dual-threat abilities help the team a ton. He has rushed for 527 yards and 11 touchdowns on the year.
The Cougars’ defense allows 19 points per game, ranking 20th in the country. They give up 122.1 rushing yards (ranked 32nd) and 206.3 passing yards (ranked 49th) per game. Faletau Satuala has been the team’s leading tackler with 77 on the season. Jack Kelly has been great at getting pressure with 10 sacks. Evan Johnson has made plays on the ball with six passes defened and four interceptions.
BYU is mad about not being in the CFP and has something to prove in this game. They are more tested than Georgia Tech and have a more balanced team. Martin can have a big day for the Cougars and help them win.
