2023 Pinstripe Bowl Preview

Publish Date: December 14, 2023

The 2023 Pinstripe Bowl features the 6-6 Rutgers Scarlet Knights against the 7-5 Miami Hurricanes. Here is the 2023 Pinstripe Bowl Preview.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-6)

Rutgers won six games to make their first bowl game since 2021. They defeated two bowl-eligible teams this season: Northwestern and Virginia Tech. All six of their losses were to bowl-eligible teams.

The Scarlet Knights score 22.8 points per game, ranking 104th in the country. They pass for 142 yards (ranked 127th) and rush for 165.4 yards per game (ranked 57th).

Gavin Wimsatt has taken most of the snaps at quarterback for Rutgers. He has 1,651 passing yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions on 47.8 percent completion. Four receivers have at least 200 yards on the season. The leading receiver has been Christian Dremel who has 34 catches for 440 yards and three touchdowns.

One running back gets most of the work out of the backfield for Rutgers. Kyle Monangai has 1,099 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. The other weapon in the running game is Wimsatt from the quarterback position with 488 yards and nine touchdowns.

Defensively, the Scarlet Knights allowed 21 points per game, ranking them 27th in the country. They give up 138.7 rushing yards (ranked 43rd) and 175.9 passing yards per game (ranked 11th). Deion Jennings and Mohamed Toure have led the team in tackles with 85 and 84 respectively. Toure also leads the team with 3.5 sacks. Max Melton has been a standout in the secondary with six passes defended and three interceptions.

Miami Hurricanes (7-5)

Miami won seven games to make their first bowl game since 2021. They defeated four bowl-eligible teams: Miami (OH), Texas A&M, Clemson and Boston College. All five losses were to teams who qualified for bowl games.

The Hurricanes score 32.1 points per game, ranking them 36th in the FBS. They pass for 264.4 yards (ranked 37th) and rush for 176.8 yards per game (ranked 45th).

Tyler Van Dyke is in the transfer portal and Emory Williams is injured, so Jacurri Brown will start at quarterback for the Hurricanes. Brown did not attempt a pass this season, but was a four-star recruit in the class of 2021. Four receivers have at least 200 receiving yards on the year, but one of them, Colbie Young, is in the transfer portal. The top receiver is Xavier Restrepo with 74 catches for 993 yards and five touchdowns.

Four running backs have at least 200 yards on the ground this season, but Donald Chaney Jr. is in the transfer portal from that group. Henry Parrish Jr. and Mark Fletcher Jr. have each produced with 579 and 512 yards respectively.

The Hurricanes’ defense allows 22.1 points per game, ranking them 39th in the country. They give up 97.1 rushing yards (ranked 10th) and 227 passing yards per game (ranked 70th). Safety James Williams and linebacker Francisco Mauigoa paced the team with 73 and 70 tackles respectively. Mauigoa tied Rueben Bain Jr. for the team lead in sacks with 7.5. Kamren Kinchens has five passes defended and five interceptions, but he may enter the draft and skip this game.

Prediction

Miami can figure out the quarterback position with the long break in between games. Their defense won’t give up much to the Scarlet Knights, who have struggled moving the ball through the air.

Miami Hurricanes 24 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 14
