North Texas Mean Green (7-6)
North Texas won seven games to make it to their third straight bowl game. They defeated one team that finished with at least a .500 record in Western Kentucky. Their only loss to a non-bowl-eligible team was to UNLV.
The Mean Green score 33.9 points per game, ranking 29th in the FBS. They pass for 262.2 yards (ranked 36th) and rush for 201.7 yards per game (ranked 24th).
Austin Aune is the oldest starting quarterback in the FBS at age 29 after playing minor league baseball before returning to play college football. He has 3,309 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on 56.7 percent completion. Seven pass-catchers have at least 200 yards on the season. Roderic Burns leads the team with 650 receiving yards, while Jyaire Shorter has a team-high 10 touchdowns.
Three running backs have over 500 rushing yards on the season. Ayo Adeyi leads the team with 740 yards and also has four touchdowns. Ikaika Ragsdale has 661 rushing yards and Oscar Adaway has 583 himself, while both have five touchdowns. Adaway hasn’t played since October with an injury, but is questionable.
Their defense allows 31.5 points per game, ranking them 110th in the nation. They concede 188.4 rushing yards (ranked 107th) and 271.7 passing yards per game (ranked 115th). Linebacker KD Davis has been one of the best in the country with 132 total tackles. Mazin Richards has paced the team with 7.5 sacks. Ridge Texada has played well this season with 15 passes defended and three interceptions.
Boise State Broncos (9-4)
Boise State won nine games to make their 21st straight bowl game. Five of their wins were over bowl-eligible teams. Their loss to UTEP was the only one to a team that did not make a bowl game.
The Broncos score 29.1 points per game, which is 62nd in the FBS. They pass for 194.7 yards (ranked 109th) and rush for 187 yards per game (ranked 38th).
Taylen Green was able to take over the quarterback job this season. He has passed for 1,905 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions on 61.4 percent completion. The Broncos have six receivers who have at least 200 yards. Latrell Cobbs and Billy Bowens each have over 400 yards and four touchdowns.
George Holani has been the leading rusher with 1,133 yards and 10 touchdowns. Behind him, Ashton Jeanty has 643 yards and six rushing touchdowns. Green has pitched in from the quarterback position with 487 yards and eight touchdowns.
The defense allows 18.5 points per game, which is the 11th-best in the country. They give up 120.8 rushing yards (ranked 24th) and 160.7 passing yards per game (ranked fourth). Linebacker DJ Schramm leads the team with 97 total tackles. Ezekiel Noa and Demitri Washington are tied for the team-lead with 4.5 sacks. Their most impactful player is safety JL Skinner, who has four passes defended and four interceptions on the season.
Boise State’s defense makes all the difference in this game. Their offense may struggle at times, but Green’s ability to extend plays with his legs will come in handy and help the Broncos get the win.
