Seattle University Men’s basketball is on fire for the 2022-2023 season. As of November 27, the Redhawks sit at 5-0. Last season, the team took the NCAA basketball league by storm last season finishing with a tie for the best record in WAC (Western Athletic Conference) with a 14-4 record and an overall record of 23-9. It was their first league title in school history. Not to mention it was their first year with Chris Victor as their head coach after parting ways with Jim Hayford after four seasons. They ultimately came up short in the WAC conference tournament falling to Abilene Christian University in the semifinals 76-78.
The Redhawks took a loss in the off-season with the departure of guard Darrion Trammell who transferred to San Diego State. Trammell led the team in scoring with 17.3 points per game (PPG) and was a core part of the team’s offense and defense. Although, this did not faze the Redhawks who are ready to play basketball and have set their sights on making the NCAA tournament in March. The Redhawks are ready to take their game to a new level this season and have already shown improvement in their offense and defense.

The numbers explain it above, they have improved in every statistic category listed above from the previous season. They are letting their shooters shoot that have them sitting at the 10th-best three-point shooting percentage in the country. The emergence of Junior guard Cameron Tyson who is averaging 28.3 PPG and shooting 51% from the three-point line in three games has given them a huge boost in their offense. The Redhawks’ improvement in their overall game is proving they should not be undermined and deserve recognition.
Don’t Forget About Coaching
It’s not just the players that make up the team’s success, but the coaching as well. In his first year as a head coach Chris Victor and his staff led the Redhawks to a 23-9 record in 2021-2022. This is a tremendous improvement from the team’s 12-11 record in 2020-2021.
Eyes Set on the Big Dance
The arrow is pointing up for the Redhawks as they are playing great basketball to start the 2022-2023 season. They look to continue playing great basketball as they take on the University of Washington Huskies on Monday, November 28th. With the season just getting started, the Seattle University Redhawks not only look to be the conference champions once again but more importantly, playing in the March Madness tournament for the first time since the 1968-1969 season. It’s time to put some respect on their name for Redhawks basketball.
