Smart will take over the team after Marquette fired Steve Wojciechowski following a seven-year run at the school. The Golden Eagles will need some rebuilding, as they went 13-14 during the 2020-2021 season.
In his coaching career, Smart has a 272-142 career record. He made one Final Four with Virginia Commonwealth in 2010-2011. In six years at Texas, Smart made the tournament in three seasons. This year, Texas was a no. 3 seed and were knocked out of the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournamnent by Abilene Christian.
