Hall of Fame former Georgetown coach John Thompson has passed away at the age of 78 according to multiple sources. There is no known cause of death yet.

Thompson coached the Georgetown Hoyas for 27 seasons. He most notably won the 1984 NCAA Tournament, becoming the first Black head coach to do so. In his career, he posted a 596-239 record and was a three-time Big East Coach of the Year.
Developing NBA players became Thompson’s specialty, as he coached Allen Iverson, Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo and many more.
Thompson’s son, John Thompson III, also coached at the university from 2004 to 2017.
