College Basketball Weekend Takeaways 2/15-2/16

Kansas Defense

Kansas is starting to perform as one of the premier defensive teams in the country. In addition, they are fourth in the country in field goal percentage defense at 37.0%. Along with, allowing only 59.8 points per game that ranks seventh-best in the country. The rim protection that is produced for Kansas is very solid with Udoka Azubuike and David McCormick. More importantly, the play of Kansas’ perimeter is solid with Marcus Garrett who continuously gets after it with size and toughness is vital for Kansas. This is in addition to the athleticism of Ochai Agbaji and Isaiah Moss to a very effective job on the perimeter defensively. The speed of Devon Dotson always puts pressure on opposing teams. The Kansas defense is what can put them over the top in the NCAA tournament and makes them a real threat to win the National Championship.

Chris Mack is coming off a terrible week with bad losses to Georgia Tech and Clemson. The inability for his star player Jordan Nwora to show up on a more consistent basis could spell trouble for this team moving forward. Over the last two games, Jordan Nwora had a combined 7 points. In addition, the backcourt needs to find more consistency. This starts with the play of Fresh Kimble and Darius Perry needing to be better. Also, David Johnson must emerge as a major contributor to give Louisville a more dynamic backcourt. Furthermore, Malik Williams and Dwayne Sutton must continue to provide toughness and timely scoring for Louisville. Another issue is Steven Enoch who needs to be a dominant prescience inside for Louisville consistently. Louisville needs to find consistency in their identity as a team if they want to compete for a National Championship.


The RAC is becoming the stable for Rutgers this season as they are 16-0 at home. This will launch them to an NCAA tournament berth. They will continue to have opportunities to play their way to a higher seed with the remaining Big Ten slate. In addition, the play of Ron Harper Jr. has been a huge reason for there success with his toughness and ability to score inside consistently. The perimeter play of Geo Baker gives them a go-to scorer on the perimeter in crucial moments. The interior play of Akwasi Yeboah provides effective scoring and rebounding. Furthermore, the bench of Rutgers provides toughness and defense. Steve Piekell instills it in this program and it is very important to their success. Piekell is doing wonders at Rutgers and the dream season will continue into the NCAA tournament.

Furthermore, they have two of the best players at each of their positions in Anthony Cowan and Jalen Smith. Cowan leads the way with his scoring ability. Smith is a dominant interior player with his versatility to consistently face up and be in attack mode. Also, the perimeter with Aaron Wiggins and Eric Ayala is great with Wiggins’ ability to shoot the basketball. As for Ayala, his toughness and ability to score the basketball is very dependable. Next, the Swiss army knife of Darryl Morsell is vital for their defense with his ability to guard multiple positions extremely well. Maryland has an extremely talented team that is ascending with an opportunity to make noise come March.

Malachi Flynn

Malachi Flynn is one of the most of least appreciated guards in the country. He’s the one who is leading this San Diego State team. His impact on the offensive end has allowed San Diego State to flourish as one of the best offenses in the country. Furthermore, the shot-making ability of Flynn is sensational with his ability to attack the basket and create his own shot from deep. Next, his passing ability is also an underrated aspect of his game. He gets others involved such as Jordan Schakel and Yanni Wetzel. Flynn is averaging 16.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. He is a complete guard. His impact on this team can’t be understated. He also makes an impact on the defensive end with creating transition opportunities. Continued, Flynn is the guy who sets the tone offensively for San Diego State and can make big-time plays when the offense stalls. Come NCAA tournament time when guards need to emerge San Diego State will have one of the best in Malachi Flynn.
