College Basketball 2nd Week Takeaways

Kentucky’s Inexperience

Kentucky’s struggles continue to be the theme as they moved to 1-3 on the season after the loss to Georgia Tech on Sunday. The inability to have consistent point guard play and identity is giving Kentucky major problems to operate offensively. Therefore, the potential of Terrence Clarke taking over the point guard duties could give Kentucky their best chance for success. Furthermore, the frontcourt for Kentucky must be stable for them offensively with Olivier Sarr leading the way, as well as, Isiah Jackson continuing to produce on the offensive boards. The lack of continuity is really showing for Kentucky as everyone playing was not within the program a year ago. Now, this has been seen before from Kentucky where the team grows to be a problem come late January, February and March but John Calipari has his hands full with this team.

Oregon Depth

Chris Duarte - Men's Basketball - University of Oregon Athletics

Dana Altman has a very different look without Payton Pritchard leading the way. However, this team has very good versatility and depth with the ability for anyone to takeover each game. Furthermore, Eugene Omoruyi has been sensational for Oregon. The transfer from Rutgers is averaging 26.5 points and 7.5 rebounds a game. Next, Chris Duarte is one of the best scoring guards in the country with his shooting ability from three. Continuing, Eric Williams has brought really good versatility to Oregon bringing great consistency. Also, the depth of Oregon is very good as well with L.J. Figueroa, Chandler Lawson and Jalen Terry coming off the bench. Now, the development of this rotation will be key for Oregon to have success. Additionally, when Will Richardson comes back for Oregon this team will take an even greater step and will be right there to win the PAC 12.

Baylor

Scott Drew’s team had a very impressive win against Illinois showcasing their offensive and defensive potential. Furthermore, Davion Mitchell brought his ability to be a lockdown defender against Ayo Dosunmu who struggled for the majority of the game. Additionally, MaCio Teague brings great length on the defensive end and is a very consistent secondary scorer for Baylor. Further, Adam Flagler’s ability to score will be critical throughout the season. Scott Drew has a Baylor team that will continue to be one of the best all season long.

Missouri Experience

Mark Smith - Men's Basketball - University of Missouri AthleticsNow, as for Missouri, this team has veterans and a lot of continuity leading to early success this season. This Missouri team is 3-0 with wins over Oregon and Witchita State. Furthermore, Xavier Pinson has been really effective for Missouri providing scoring, rebounding, and getting others involved. Additionally, Mark Smith is the ideal lead guard to score at a high level with the toughness he provides. Also, Jeremiah Tilmon gives Missouri really good stability and consistency in their frontcourt. Continuing, Dru Smith provides really good energy for Missouri’s backcourt in transition especially. Now, Cuonzo Martin has this team playing at a high level with great opportunities coming with games against Liberty and Illinois.

Villanova

Villanova and Jay Wright reestablished their potential on Sunday with a very good road win over Texas. Furthermore, the big three for Villanova is Collin Gillespie, Justin Moore and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. Continuing, Gillespie brings tremendous stability for Villanova playing with great pace and poise. Additionally, Justin Moore is giving Villanova a great option on the perimeter to be their go-to scorer. Next, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl is one of the most efficient players in the country and his ability to make plays in the high post. Also, Caleb Daniels and Jermaine Samuels fit Villanova tremendously being glue guys who can be very productive with or without the basketball. The biggest question for Villanova will be the depth moving forward needing Cole Swider, Eric Dixon and Brandon Slater. This win for Villanova over Texas will give them great momentum towards Big East play.
