Markus Howard (Marquette) vs Myles Powell (Seton Hall)

Myles Powell-  The entire offense revolves around Powell. His shot-making ability is at an extremely high level. He moves without the ball well and he can hit perimeter jumpers on the move or with spot-ups. He’s very physical and strong with the ball and creates really good separation for shot creation and drives. His mid-range game is very good as well. He’s a pure scorer and can lead the country in scoring next year. He’s an average defender who does a solid job of sticking with his man. The lateral movement could improve along with playing with more activity defensively.

Markus Howard-  The ability to score for Howard is exceptional. He moves without the ball really well along with his ability to pull up off the dribble in the mid-range and for three. He’s always shot ready and will shoot a large volume of shots. He can also get downhill and finish around the basket pretty well. The offense for Marquette will entirely run through Howard and he has a great chance to lead the country in scoring.

Matchup

These two are the two most prolific scorers in the country. Further, both Howard and Powell can take over the game at any point from the perimeter. In addition, the leadership of both players will be tested heavily in this matchup. Also, the two will be competing for leading the country in scoring as well as, leading their teams to major success in the Big East. When Powell and Howard go against each other it will be must-watch.

Jalen Smith (Maryland) vs Luka Garza (Iowa)

Jalen Smith-  He’s super athletic and is very active on the boards. Smith must improve his body to become stronger to operate in the interior. He is solid around the basket and cleans up misses well but needs to develop a go-to move in the post. Smith can step away and hit perimeter shots and will only continue to improve his percentages as a rim runner runs the floor very well. A really good rim protector alters a lot of shots.

Luka Garza-  Garza has very good touch around the basket and can step out to the perimeter and hit an occasional three. He’s a solid rebounder and has the ability to face up in the post and shoot over the top. He gives great effort on both ends working to be in the best position. His foot speed is not the best, therefore, he needs deception and skill to get by defenders to go along with his inability to move great defensively. He must improve on taking better angles to be a more effective defender.

Matchup

Smith and Garza are two of the best big men in the country. Further, the length and athleticism of Smith will be difficult for Luka Garza to contain when he’s moving. Also, Garza’s ability to spread out on the floor and hit from the perimeter will be hard to guard. Furthermore, Garza physically can give Jalen Smith issues in the post. However, Smith’s ability to move around the basket will be hard to guard to contain. The contrasts these two players have will create a very intriguing matchup.

Tristan Clark (Baylor) vs Jaden McDaniels (Washington)

Tristan Clark- Clark is a dynamic athlete who possesses great skill as he dives to the basket very hard. His activity on offense is really good when he’s looking for post-ups with active hands. He is very smooth around the basket being able to operate attacking both sides. He’s an all-around post player with good feel, footwork and ability to explode to the basket. His ability to get in good post defense position allows him to be in great position to be in help. His feet move very well giving him the ability to move laterally.

Jaden McDaniels- McDaniels has great explosiveness and is really long and can finish around the basket easily. He is a go-to scorer with the ability to hit mid-range jumpers consistently and will continue to stretch out his range. Also, he runs the floor really well and creates good spacing. He must continue to build his body to become more effective in the post and as a defender. Also, he must have a better mentality on the defensive end to be a complete player.

Matchup

The experience of Clark gives the edge on McDaniels, however, both of the players are equal in terms of athleticism. Also, the skill level will lean towards Clark as he is more dynamic and smooth with the ball. In addition, McDaniels has the talent to be great but he is raw in his development. Furthermore, this matchup will be the focus of youth versus experience with both having great talent and athleticism.

Tre Jones (Duke) vs Cassius Winston (Michigan State)

Image result for tre jones dukeTre Jones-  Jones is an elite on-ball defender who is arguably the best defender in the country. His active hands create turnovers and he has the ability to stay in front is as good as anyone in the country. Also, he rebounds well for his size and gets out in transition well. He’ll be the leader for Duke and be the anchor of the defense. His biggest improvement needs to be to become a consistent shooter who can be reliable from mid-range and deep. He’s good at attacking the basket and finishing with runners and off-balanced layups.

Cassius Winston-  Winston is the best point guard in the country, as everything Michigan State runs is through him. The ability to shoot perimeter jumpers off the bounce is very good. His distribution skills are great, as he is able to give his teammates great scoring opportunities. Winston plays with great poise and body control, as he’s not the quickest but uses his high IQ and takes good angles to get the necessary separation. A pretty good driver finishes around the rim effectively and is very good at ball screen action. The lateral quickness is not very good can get caught off guard by cutters. His on-ball defense is solid as his technique is there so he stays in a good position.

Matchup

The rematch of the Elite 8 game will be very good as these two point guards are elite leaders. Also, the matchup of Jones guarding Winston will be great because of Winston’s ability to score and Jones’ on-ball defense. The other end of this matchup will dictate a lot of this game if Jones’ can take advantage of Winston’s average defense.

Trevion Williams (Purdue) vs Mamadi Diakite (Virginia)

Trevion Williams- Williams has a good jump hook to his right hand and a solid drop step to his right. He is active in getting post position and is a good screener. Williams is a solid rebounder who needs to develop a left hand and become a better decision-maker. He does a decent job of helping and recovering in ball screen action. Williams doesn’t have the best foot speed can get attacked by quicker bigs. He communicates well and gives good effort on defense, as he will look to elevate his game this season.

Mamadi Diakite-  Diakite has a very good ability to find spots in the high post to operate and score. His face-up game is strong with good feel. He is also a good screener and gives second chance opportunities consistently. The activity of Diakite is really impressive and he makes many secondary actions happen. His shot selection leads him to be efficient. Further, he does a very good job of rim-protecting and also his ability to hedge and recover is exceptional. He can struggle to guard on the perimeter.

Matchup

The toughness inside for this matchup will be great as both are the primary offensive option. In addition, Diakite can use his athleticism against Willaims to face him up and attack him. Furthermore, Williams is great with his left hand if he can get postioning, he will have a lot of success. The two big men will be competing at a high level every possession on both ends.

Killian Tillie (Gonzaga) vs Isaiah Stewart (Washington)

Killian Tillie-  His ability to score at all levels is really good, as his shot is very smooth. He moves extremely well without the ball as a big and his ability to spread the floor is great. He’s very effective off of ball screen action being able to pop for a perimeter shot or driving to the basket as a roller. Health is the only thing against Tille as he missed the end of the 2017-2018 season and the majority of the 2018-2019 season. He moves his feet very well defensively and is great in helping and recovering. The ability to guard in the interior and the perimeter is very solid.

*Tillie is out indefinitely after going through arthroscopic knee surgery.

Isaiah Stewart-  Stewart brings great effort on a consistent basis and is a dominant force around the basket. Also, he rebounds at an extremely high level on both ends. He has the ability to consistently have 20 points and 15 rebounds in a game this season. Further, his defense is solid with his feet he moves well and can alter shots at the rim for drivers. Stewart will be the primary post for Washington and will bring a great consistency of effort as a tone-setter.

Matchup

The versatility of Tillie will be a very interesting matchup decider for Stewart containing him. Now, around the basket, Stewart is very physical with a great motor that will be hard to get easy looks. In addition, if Tillie can stretch Stewart away from the basket it will negate Stewart’s ability to be a dominant defender at the rim. The style of play will dictate who has the upper hand in this matchup.

Jermaine Samuels (Villanova) vs Ochai Agbaji (Kansas)

Jermaine Samuels- His ability to be an all-around scorer gives Samuels great versatility. The ability to get to the basket is really good with his first step. He is a three-level scorer. He should only improve even more with the skill development at Villanova. He’s developed into a really effective shooter as well with a very smooth release. Samuels is a tad slow defensively and gets caught out of position at times. He brings good energy and is very solid on the boards.

Ochai Agbaji- Agbaji is a very solid all-around player who is sneaky athletic. He’s a three-level scorer who gets in great position to score. This goes along with his willingness to play with freedom on offense. He has the strength to get to the basket and score effectively. He has great potential with his limited experience and raw skill set. He is very composed with a good feel in his game. His size and activity as a defender are pretty good.

Matchup

The dynamic ability of both of these wings will be fascinating in this matchup. Samuels’ ability to match the energy and toughness of Ochai Agbaji will be key in this matchup. Also, if Agbaji can show development on the offensive end, he will create problems for Samuels. In addition, if Samuels can make perimeter jumpers against Agbaji, he will have the advantage in this matchup.

Tyrese Maxey (Kentucky) vs Scottie Lewis (Florida)

Tyrese Maxey-  The combo guard will bring the ability to score in three levels with great athleticism. Further, he is very good with pull up jumpers off the dribble. He competes on a consistent basis on both ends and rebounds well also. His athleticism and effort on defense make him a quality defender.

Image result for scottie lewisScottie Lewis-  Lewis brings a great motor on a consistent basis on both ends. Next, his ability to defend is really good with his quickness, length and competitiveness. He is an effective passer with the ability to put his teammates in spots to succeed. His development as a shooter will determine his ability to really impact the game immediately.

Matchup

The two dynamic freshmen are both extremely competitive and bring really good toughness. Also, the ability to defend each other on the perimeter will be good. Further, whichever player can take the next step offensively will have the edge in this matchup. These will be two of the most versatile guards in the country competing.

Anthony Cowan (Maryland) vs Cassius Winston (Michigan State)

Anthony Cowan- Cowan is a very good all-around point guard. His effort is solid defensively as the ability to stay in a stance is good. He could be a more productive defender against dribble penetration. The active hands defensively are very solid as well. He can improve on becoming a more efficient shooter with better shot selection. Also, he could be an even better distributor than he already is. His ability to hit perimeter jumpers is very good on the catch and dribble. Cowan plays with really good composure and awareness and his off-ball movement is good. He’s a pretty effective driver also with good touch around the basket.

Matchup

The two All-Big Ten point guards are two players who are very smooth scorers and play with great poise. In addition, whichever guard decides to defend at a high level will have the advantage. Also, the ability to push the pace in transition will give an immediate edge offensively. The two guards competing will be very good and it will be a battle for the top of the Big Ten.

Cole Anthony (UNC) vs Tre Jones (Duke)

Cole Anthony-  Anthony brings explosiveness as an exceptional athlete. He competes at a high level on a consistent basis. Next, he does a really good job of attacking the basket in the half-court and in transition. On the defensive end, the ability to stay at the front is really good with his technique and energy. Anthony is a solid shooter but could improve as an overall shooter to be able to score consistently at three levels.

Tre Jones-  Jones is an elite on-ball defender who is arguably the best defender in the country.

Matchup

Anthony brings very good athletism and tenacity that will be a major test for Jones defensively. If there is a guard that can contain Anthony it would be Jones. In addition, the on-ball defense of Jones is very good with good technique. Offensively for Jones, he will need to be able to knock down perimeter jumpers with the lack of athleticism to get by Anthony. This matchup will be very good especially when Jones is guarding Anthony in the best rivalry game in the sport.
