College Basketball Week in Review 2/25-3/3

The best month in all of sports in finally here: March. For the next four weeks, teams and fans will experience the ecstasy of winning and the agony of defeat. With Selection Sunday two weeks away, here is a recap what went down in college hoops this week:

Indiana Sweeps Season Series with Spartans

A month ago, the Hoosiers beat Michigan State in East Lansing to end a seven-game skid. Exactly a month later, the Spartans fell again to Indiana, this time in Bloomington. Justin Smith paced IU with 24 points, as freshman Romeo Langford struggled with only nine points.

The Spartans led for most of the game, but ran out of gas without the services of Nick Ward and obviously, Josh Langford, who is out for the season. The Hoosiers had a monster week with two home wins over Wisconsin and Michigan State, keeping their NCAA tournament hopes alive. The must beat Illinois and Rutgers next week to have a chance at an at-large bid.

Tennessee Avenges Loss to Kentucky

In a huge game with SEC title implications, The Vols dominated the Wildcats, avenging a blowout loss in Rupp Arena a month ago. Jordan Bone and Grant Williams combined for 51 points, and Tennessee limited Kentucky to just 52 points on 31% shooting. After losing two of three games, many seemed to hop off the Tennessee bandwagon.

With Saturday’s drubbing of the Wildcats, the Vol’s made it clear they’re still a national title threat. The SEC race is down to Tennessee and LSU with just two games left for both teams.

Washington Upset by California

The California Bears entered the game with a 6-22 record. They were on a 23-game Pac 12 losing streak dating back to last season. Despite David Crisp’s 32 points, the 25th-ranked Huskies fell to California. Washington had already clinched the Pac 12 title, but this is the type of loss will knock a team down a couple of seed lines. In what will be remembered as one of the worst Power Five conferences in recent memory, this looks to be a one-bid league. Arizona State has a shot at a bid, but they are squarely on the bubble.

Other Notable Games/Performances:

  • Kansas keeps Big 12 title hopes alive by beating Kansas State
  • Virginia Tech beat Duke as Zion misses second straight game
  • Iowa drops two consecutive to Ohio State, Rutgers
  • Wofford’s Fletcher MaGee scored 36 points in a win over Samford
  • Villanova gets revenge against Marquette in huge Big East tilt
  • UCF gets first Quadrant 1 win versus Houston
