College Basketball: Week in Review

Saturday’s game of the day saw Kentucky get upset by Seton Hall in an instant classic at Madison Square Garden. We also saw Indiana outlast Louisville, Syracuse survive Georgetown and Marquette beat Wisconsin in a rivalry-filled weekend. Oh, and if you weren’t watching all of the NFL madness on Sunday, Tennessee and Gonzaga provided us with a Final Four preview.

Need I remind you, it’s only December folks.

Week in Review – December 3-9

Team of the Week: Tennessee Volunteers

PHOENIX, ARIZONA – DECEMBER 09: Admiral Schofield #5 of the Tennessee Volunteers

In an up-and-down affair, it was big man Admiral Schofield who stole the show versus top-ranked Gonzaga. The senior forward dropped 30 points, including 6 of 10 from three-point range. The Vols firmly cemented themselves as the top dogs in the SEC, fully capable of winning it all in April. Next up for Rick Barnes’ squad is a road matchup against rival Memphis on Saturday.

Player of the Week: Yoeli Childs (BYU)

It was a huge week for BYU, with matchups against in-state rivals Utah State and Utah. In a 95-80 win over USU, Childs poured in 31 points while shooting 11-18 from the field. He followed up that performance with 31 points on an efficient 13-16 from the floor, including an #SCTop10 dunk over two defenders. After three consecutive losses, the Cougars needed someone to step up, and Yoeli Childs delivered.

Upset of the Week: Tulsa over #16 Kansas State

Frank Haith’s Golden Hurricanes knocked off 16th-ranked Kansas State in a game that was downright ugly. Martins Igbanu gave Tulsa the lead with 1:53 remaining and not a single point were scored the rest of the way. The final score was 47-46, a score that resembled more of a Big 12 football game. Either way, it was a massive win for Tulsa, who took down Oklahoma State just days prior. For Kansas State, it was a bad loss considering how weak their non-conference schedule is. They’ll need to resolve their offensive woes quickly before Big 12 play begins.

Games to watch this week: LSU at Houston, Villanova at Kansas, Tennessee at Memphis, Notre Dame vs Purdue, NC State vs Penn State, Butler vs Indiana, Utah at Kentucky, Gonzaga at North Carolina, Virginia Tech vs Washington, Cincinnati at Mississippi State
