5 Tips & Tricks for Optimizing Science in Civ 7! | Guide, Yields, Tile Improvements, & Victory Paths

Civilization 7 Science Tips & Strategy

The basics of Science in Civ 7 are actually pretty simple, especially compared to some of the other Victory Paths. With Science, the primary impetus of players is to get their overall Science yield as high as possible, progress through the tech tree, unlock key nodes, and achieve various milestones, depending on the Age you are in. The following are, generally speaking, what you are looking to achieve in each Age with Science.

  • Antiquity Age: Unlock Codex’s
  • Exploration Age: Increase yields per tile
  • Modern Age: Complete the Space Race and win the game

In order to achieve success throughout a game, you’ll need to fine-tune your Science strategy for each Age. In Antiquity, for example, you should make sure you are unlocking those Mastery slots in the tech tree that reward you with a Codex whenever you can, whereas the Exploration tile yield demands that you optimize spaces and look more at your empire’s land.

But, generally speaking, you will always want to be getting as much Science as possible, as quickly as possible, regardless of what Age you are in. To do so, we recommend the following five tips and tricks to keep in mind in your game.

  1. Focus on three improvement types: Production, Science, and Food (in that order)
    • Getting Production online speeds everything up and is generally considered to be the strongest resource type in the game currently. It will help you to get to Wonders quickly and get those all-important Science buildings up quickly. Then, it’s all about growth and getting as many specialists as possible to bump up your overall Science yield.
  2. Prioritize settling near resources
    • Resources increase Science buildings that are placed adjacent to them, just like Coastal tiles do for Gold, and Wonders do for several types of yields. So, the more resources you can get, the more tiles can produce even higher Science numbers.
  3. Civ and Leader selections are key
    • Simply put, some Leaders and Civs are better for Science than others. Confucius, Harriet Tubman, the Mayan Civ, and others like them can completely change your game when it comes to maximizing yields and can make or break your ability to win a game on the Science Victory Path. So, choose wisely.
  4. Use the Steal Technology Espionage action on cooldown
    • Even if you aren’t playing as Harriet Tubman, this is still an incredible way to get tons of Science throughout a game of Civ and is the most effective way to leverage Influence to do so. Throughout a full game, this can add up to some serious numbers, so save your Influence for this if possible.
  5. Prioritize Scientific City-State relationships
    • The other way to use Influence in your favor is when you see a City-State with a blue beaker icon on their nameplate. This indicates that they are Scientific and will give you a specific Science reward for achieving a friendship with them.

Outside of these tips, there is plenty more you can do in order to give yourself an edge in Science in Civ 7, but a lot of that will come down to your specific playstyle, your game seed, position on the map, tall vs wide playstyle, and so forth. So, definitely give yourself some room to be adaptable while still sticking to the suggestions above, and good luck achieving a Science victory in Civ 7!
