How to Get Into PC Gaming

Publish Date: April 12, 2025

There isn’t a right or wrong way to play games. The whole point of gaming is that you play the way you want to, and if you’re having fun, then you’re winning. Video games are designed to let you go to other worlds, to brush up skills, or even learn things.

With this in mind, a lot of gamers do like PC gaming rather than other ways to play. They find that, for certain genres, PC gaming works especially well. So, how can you get into PC gaming and check out the hype for yourself?

Get a Good Gaming PC

One of the reasons that a lot of people struggle to get into PC gaming is that it can be very expensive to buy a good gaming computer and, if you don’t know what you’re looking for, it can also be daunting to build one yourself. Thankfully, there are solutions to this.

You can buy pre-built gaming pcs, which allow you to essentially plug in and go. The downside to this is that they might be more expensive than they’re worth and you don’t get the biggest advantage of playing on a pc, which is the ability to customize your computer.

Another option is to use a website that allows you to buy parts and essentially design your own pc, like PCPartPicker. As well as parts, you can also look at guides and even look at completed builds to get some ideas.

When choosing these parts, don’t get carried away and pick the best of the best, because the price will rapidly add up. Think about the kinds of games you will play and what requirements they have from your machine.

While you could invest in a gaming laptop, they’re often more limited and expensive than a full-sized gaming pc. The main benefit is that they’re much more mobile, so you can play games on holiday as well as at home, and you don’t strictly need a desk (although it’s still good to have a mouse and a nearby power outlet). Otherwise, you will get a cheaper and better product by investing in a pc.

Don’t Forget Peripherals

As well as the pc itself, you will also need peripherals to be able to play games. The basic peripherals are a monitor, a mouse, and a keyboard. These will allow you to interact with the computer. Without them, it’s a bit like trying to play on a console without a screen or a controller.

These are the basics, but it doesn’t end there. Some monitors have built-in speakers and microphones, but it’s still good to have a separate speaker and microphone system. Another option is to get headphones and a microphone, which is ideal when you’re playing with other people online.

You could also consider using a controller for certain games on the pc. This can be a good way to enjoy the games you love on a console, without having to get used to a new controller method. Or you can invest in joysticks or other peripherals designed for gaming.

Online and Offline Gaming

One of the best things about gaming on a pc is the wide variety of games you can enjoy. You can play casual online games like free spins casino, which also lets you meet people online who have the same interests as you.

You can also play strategy games or other games that might have control systems that don’t port very well to consoles. You can get invested in new worlds and characters when you play RPGs, you can play solo games or games with other people, the world is completely your oyster.

Modding Your Games

Last but absolutely not least, if you want to really benefit from pc gaming, it’s worth getting into mods. Even new games like Civilization 7 have mods that alter the gameplay in small and significant ways.

Mods are brilliant because they mean that games become infinitely more replayable. If you’ve enjoyed a game, but wish it had more, you can download mods that other people have made and you can essentially enjoy a whole new game.

Whether you want a mod that tweaks things to just make something more enjoyable or more user friendly, or you want a mod that practically builds a new DLC or game on top of the game you love, you can find something that fits the bill. Even if you don’t, you can always learn how to make mods yourself.
