The Cardinals have shipped Tommy Pham to Tampa Bay for prospects per USA Today Sports.
St. Louis will receive Genesis Cabrera, Justin Williams and Roel Ramirez in return from the Rays.
Pham is hitting .248 with 14 home runs and 41 RBIs in 98 games this season. There has been reported tension between Pham and the Cardinals’ front office. Jerry Crasnick reports that Pham was not happy with his $570,000 contract being renewed after a good 2017 season. Mark Saxon has added that Pham and the front office had disputes over the team not getting him an expensive piece of exercise equipment.
The Rays are .500 but have decided to be sellers at the deadline outside of this trade. Chris Archer is still rumored to be moved before the deadline. With Pham’s problems in St. Louis and his manageable salary, the Rays made him a target to acquire.
For the Cardinals, the left-handed Cabrera is 7-6 with a 4.12 ERA this season for the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits. He is still just 21-years-old. Williams, the 22-year-old, is hitting .258 at Triple-A Durham from the left side of the plate. Ramirez is 23-years-old with a 3.85 ERA in six minor league seasons.
This trade doesn’t fully indicate whether the Cardinals will be buyers or sellers before the deadline.
