In shocking news out of Cleveland, the Browns have announced that they will release Josh Gordon on Monday. Gordon is a remarkably talented wide receiver who has been constantly battling substance abuse issues. However, he seemed to be back on the right track and moving away from his problems.
Gordon came back much bigger and stronger in the offseason, showing that he was ready to renew his NFL career. What makes this move so surprising is that there have not been reports of any issues between Gordon and the Browns organization until now.
Why are they releasing him?
While the full details of why he is being released have not been revealed, there are speculations about trust issues. According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, Gordon was injured after Friday’s practice, but not while he was with the Browns. Part of the reason the Browns are releasing him could be that they don’t know how he got hurt. This would mean there are trust barriers between the two parties. The Browns have stuck with Josh Gordon through his issues for the past six years. If he can’t be completely honest with them after all this time, they may not want to keep him on their roster.
Because Josh Gordon is a great talent, other teams will definitely look at signing him. He can certainly be a solid addition to a playoff contender. Eventually, the NFL will find out why Gordon was released. Based on that, other organizations might consider the opportunity to bring a former top receiver to the NFL. For now, though, the Josh Gordon era in Cleveland has come to an end after a series of unfortunate events.
Update: According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Gordon was injured at a promotional shoot and other teams have inserted trade offers for the wide receiver.
