For those who aren’t aware, data miners leaked the next nine heroes that are supposed to be added to the Apex Games. Among those names is one called Scryer, who appears to mess around vision and scanning. With season 14 just around the corner, Xiomara Contreras, aka Vantage and her trailers are already out. However, with them emerged a theory, could Xenia Contreras, Vantage’s mother be Apex Legends Scryer, the leaked legend?
Explaining the icon and placeholder image
For those unaware, this image was the image that appeared as Scryer’s icon in the champion selection screen. While this is very clearly not Vantage’s mother, there is also the fact these are placeholder images and are not the final version of the upcoming Apex legends. As seen with Newcastle’s icon in the leak, these images aren’t definitive. In fact, another leaked hero was Catalyst. However, the image used for Catalyst is a personal project of an artist named Yang J, meaning that the images that the leaks use are placeholders and not the final art.
The images above show this. The Newcastle in-game wears a different armor than the one in the icon above, and has a much bigger beard and a different face design. Meanwhile, Catalyst can be found here. The art is over three years old, and belongs to a personal project of the artist. While this image may serve as the inspiration for Catalyst’s final design, it is very unlikely that this is her final appearance.
So the icon for Apex Legends Scryer could just be an early concept. While the rest of the character is completely different from Vantage’s mother, the shinning eye that seems to be the source of the characters power seems very similar in concept to Xenia’s eye. Not to mention that Xiomara and likely Xenia are both hunters, so Scryer’s abilities to scan and mess with scans/vision would fit well into her mom’s lore. Perhaps this was an older version of Scryer, and Respawn decided to change the hero’s backstory and appearance to better fit the character they are trying to develop.
Why is Vantage’s mom relevant?
Ok, so maybe Scryer changed, but why is Vantage’s mother relevant to any of this? Isn’t she just another background character? For now, yes she is. However as shown in Vantage’s gameplay trailer, it might not stay this way. Xenia is currently incarcerated and is Prisoner T-0323. When Vantage goes to visit her mother, she manages to smuggle in a knife, saying she would get her out. However, her mother immediately discourages the idea, saying that if Xiomara ended up incarcerated too, she would be devastated. Xenia calls the guards to escort her daughter away, but not before she quickly grabs the knife for herself.
Since the animators went out of their way to show this scene, it must be relevant in the near future. Xenia now has a weapon that her captors have no clue she has. It is possible that she will use it to escape and join the games for reason still not revealed. She could also fake her own death and come back as a ghost. This would fit particularly well with the hero’s kit and name. Either way, it is very likely that this is not the last the public has seen of Vantage’s mother.
What about Commander Scryer from Bangalore’s Stories of the Outlands?
In Bangalore’s Stories of the Outlands, a Commander Scryer is shown fighting Anita and Jackson. Many started linking him to the leaked champion Scryer. But is unlikely this is the case, for a few reasons. Firstly, Scryer is his name, and most heroes don’t enter their real names as their apex legend name. While of course there are exceptions, such as Makoa Gibraltar becoming the Gibby we all know and love, most legends join and change their name for the competition. If Scryer were to be commander Scryer, both Anita and Jackson would almost instantly recognize him, and he wouldn’t last long as a legend.
It’s also possible that Xenia had a run in with Apex Legends Scryer in the past. Perhaps he was someone to her. Maybe he was the one in charge of escorting her when she got away. Either way, it is possible that she will take up his name and join the Apex Games sometime in the future.
