Benson couldn’t find the field at Oregon, but transferred to Florida State and blossomed. He is now in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As a four-star recruit in the class of 2020, Benson signed with Oregon in the class of 2020 out of Mississippi. He redshirted his first year on campus then had six carries for 22 yards and one touchdown in 2021 for the Ducks. Following the 2021 season, Benson transferred to Florida State. In 2022, Benson totaled 990 rushing yards, 144 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He helped the Seminoles win 10 games that season. For the 2023 season, he totaled 906 rushing yards, 227 receiving yards and 15 total touchdowns. His play led Florida State to an undefeated regular season, but they were left out of the College Football Playoff.
Following the regular season, Benson declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is currently projected to be a day-two pick.
Trey Benson Strengths
Benson has a solid size for an NFL running back. He is 6-foot and 216 pounds, which should help him handle the wear and tear of a pro workload. With his size comes decent power, which he should use more often. He also has good contact balance to stay on his feet when running through a defense.
He is able to take plays to the house as a big play threat. Benson has good acceleration and speed, which can turn a small hole into a big play. His speed was on display in the open field, as he was hard to catch and Florida State even used him as a returner to capitalize on that big time speed.
His receiving ability is solid for a running back in this class. He showed he is a decent route-runner for the ones he was asked to run. Benson has good hands and once the ball is in his hands, he can pick up extra yardage on the ground with his speed and vision.
Trey Benson Weaknesses
Benson could process blocks a little quicker. He sometimes has trouble seeing the holes and running through them. This is partially because it takes him a tick to see the hole, but also because he can be indecisive at times.
In the open field, Benson can allow blocks to be set up better and use his blocking better. He also isn’t the most creative runner, as there are times he can make people miss, but doesn’t. There are also times where there is open space to run to, but he doesn’t always run to that space.
While he does have receiving skills, he wasn’t asked to run too many different routes at Florida State. To be more of a weapon at the NFL level, he will need to add to his route tree. This could allow him to be split out wide as a mismatch.
Projected Draft Range: Second Round Pick-Third Round Pick
