With March comes a new Competitive Season and a new hero pool system that cycles out a set of heroes each week. This, along with some much quicker patches coming through from developers, have combined to make Overwatch feel fresh and new at the moment. However, with all of this change coming through, a viable hero tier list may be more valuable than ever.
The following tier list exists precisely to help guide players through this more dynamic meta, reflecting how individually well-kitted Overwatch’s 31 heroes are and how well they synergize with other powerful heroes. With each month, there will be a new tier list released to update changes in each hero’s performance from month-to-month (February 2020) so be sure to check back next month to see what changes lie ahead. Also keep in mind that Season 21 will continue throughout the entire month of March, meaning that the currently limited map pool will remain in effect. Those will be taken into consideration when ranking heroes.
Tier 1: Optimal heroes with high win-rates and synergy
- Reinhardt
- Mei
- D.Va
- McCree
- Ana
- Lucio
As it stands, only a select few heroes are currently must-picks in Overwatch, and even these are at the mercy of weekly hero bans. The first few weeks of the OWL have shown us just how powerful Mei and McCree currently feel on DPS. Combine that core with a speed-boosted Reinhardt and a quick-flying D.Va and you’ve got a very oppressive team comp on your hands with a great balance of pressure and tempo. Ana tops everything off with her high-value grenade and Nano-Boost ultimate. All in all, if these heroes aren’t banned, they’re clear favorites.

Tier 2: Good alternatives to Tier 1 and still viable overall
- Tracer
- Hanzo
- Solider: 76
- Brigitte
- Doomfist
- Baptiste
- Moira
- Reaper
- Orisa
- Winston
Several of these heroes are either good substitutions to those in Tier 1 or can provide good counters to those heroes. For example, Reaper can fill in for Mei or McCree on maps where the fights are more close-quarters and the team moves as a unit. In the same way, Winston can provide a good alternative to D.Va or can even compliment D.Va in place of Reinhardt. Overall, look for these heroes to maintain the same style of play as the ones in Tier 1, just with slightly less oppressive kits.
Tier 3: Good situational picks but less strong overall
- Sombra
- Sigma
- Mercy
- Zenyatta
- Pharah
- Symmetra
- Bastion
- Sigma
- Torbjorn
- Wrecking Ball
- Widowmaker
These heroes can all be perfectly good in niche situations or when being played by players who are specialists in that hero. However, when it comes to rating them against the rest of the Overwatch roster, they are currently more easily exploitable or have better options. Look for these when certain heroes are banned to come up with mini-metas comprised of less popular picks.

Tier 4: Difficult to have success in the current meta
- Ashe
- Roadhog
- Zarya
- Junkrat
- Genji
Overall, these are slightly less powerful overall. than other heroes in the game. There are moments where they can fit into niche compositions, however, there are typically more viable options that are available. Look elsewhere, if possible.
As a reminder, this tier list is currently operating off of the latest live patch, 1.45.0.0. This list will be updated as patches continue to come out throughout the month of March and a new list will be published in April.
