Foursome Atop Leader Board at Travelers Championship
Through 36 holes at the Travelers Championship, Tyrone Van Aswegen, Daniel Berger, Russell Henley and Marc Leishman have found themselves all knotted up in a tie for first at 7-under.
The amazing part about golf is that it can be anyone’s day/weekend, with this weekend being no exception. The gap between the highest ranked player and the lowest ranked player of those four men in the official world golf rankings is 308 spots; Berger ranked 40th and Van Aswegen ranked 348th.
Van Aswegen hasn’t found himself in a position like this since October of last year at the Frys.com Open where he finished tied for third. It’s also a nice change of pace for Berger as well. Berger, who won the FedEx St. Jude Classic back in June, has had little success since then with his best finish of tied for 37th coming at the U.S. Open back in July. Prior to his first career win, Berger was shaping up to be a solid young golfer and a Ryder Cup hopeful, but his recent struggles have shifted the eyes of the golf world away from him. Now, with Berger’s name back in the spotlight he has a chance to prove he’s worthy of a spot on the Ryder Cup team and a spot in our mind when we think of golfers.
The previous champion and current Olympian, Bubba Watson, hasn’t found the same success he had last year at TPC River Highlands posting a 3-under score through the first two rounds. However, Watson was propelled to a first place finish last year thanks to an 8-under 62 in his first round, but from what I’ve seen during the television coverage, Watson is not dialed into that caliber of play. Luckily for us, we’ll get a chance to see if Watson can channel something spectacular for these last 36 holes.
Patrick Reed and Matt Kuchar also elected to keep their commitment to the Travelers Championship and have kept pace with their counterpart Watson. Kuchar is currently sitting at 4-under and Reed at 3-under.
Play resumes tomorrow as the golf world looks to see if that four-way tie will be broken, or if the traffic jam will continue to grow. Until then, enjoy this.
