San Diego got great news when they found out the Chargers would stay in San Diego. That is about the only good news the Chargers should have this season. They are the least talented team in the division. They have a below average offensive line. Philip Rivers was sacked 40 times last season. The only year in which he was sacked more in his career was in 2012 when he was sacked 49 times. Melvin Gordan also has not proven anything yet in the NFL. Behind this offensive line it may be tough sledding for him in his sophomore season as well.
The Chargers also lack talent in the secondary after losing Patrick Robinson and Eric Weddle. It will be a picnic for teams to pass on the Chargers defense. The Chargers are going to struggle against the Raiders, Chiefs and Broncos. There is a chance they go 0-6 in the division and if that happens it will be very hard for them to be a good team.
Philip Rivers also isn’t getting any younger. The Chargers need to rebuild and form a new identity by moving on from Rivers. He has been a good, serviceable quarterback but has met his peak. Along with this, Mike McCoy, their head coach, has not led the team to the playoffs in his first three years. His career record as a head coach is 22-26, with last years 4-12 record being his worst. It is time for a new direction all together for the Chargers. This season will be bumpy to say the least.
